“art must be a unity of expression so complete that the medium becomes unimportant.” - Georgia O’Keeffe
Madison is best known for using the written word as the basis for layered, multivalent paintings that reveal the subjectivity of both image and text when they’re taken out of their original contexts and layered together.
Inspired by history, strong feminine archetypes, and the fleetingness of life, she manipulates paint and other found materials around old book pages to experience words in a new way. The palimpsest of colors, text, and texture allows the viewer to channel unconscious fears and desires, create stories, and connect to a more complex self.
